A brazen spotlight: Emma-Kate Woodham

Every week Brazen will shine a spotlight on someone by asking them a set of questions.

Those questions are

1) What are 3 things people don’t know about you?

2) How do you motivate yourself and stay motivated?

3) If you had to start your adult life over again, what would you change?

4) What’s the single best thing that has ever happened to you?

5) What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

This week our Brazen spotlight is on Emma-Kate Woodham

1) What are 3 things people don’t know about you ?
A ) was an only child and grandchild for the first 10 years of my life .
B) I grew up on an orchard on the east coast of New Zealand in a small coastal village called Haumoana.
C) I have a Irish passport that was very helpful when I was traveling around the world in my 20s.

2) How do you motivate yourself and stay motivated?
I was born in 1974 with a rare congenital Heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus and I was not expected to survive my childhood years let alone live into my mid 40’s. I wake up most days  feeling very tired but full of gratitude for being able to take the first morning breath.

I also have a strong Mindfulness and meditation practice that helps me manage my many health issues and keep any health and stress issues at bay.

3) If you had to start your adult life over again, what would you change?
I would be kinder to myself and others , I would let go of  the labels and stories that no longer service  me and I would let go of the fear and lean into the Love.

4) What was the single best thing that ever happened to you ?
The best thing that ever happened to me was becoming a Mum to my 3 beautiful and much loved children. For me having children was a dream I was told I could never have due to my heart condition. So they are my greatest love and miracle.

5) What would you do if you weren’t afraid.
That is an interesting question. What am I afraid of ? I think I’m afraid of not always being able to step up and be vulnerable, opening up and having honest conversation .  My dream is to help others that have lived with trauma , anxiety and chronic pain to not have the pain and suffering I did and I would like to give them hope for life that can still be filled with love and joy.

Why Brazen? Who gets heard? Who gets a voice?

For months we discussed the lack of diversity, the overwhelming share of voice held by white men and we wondered how we could improve the quality of stories told, fix the blatant inequality and help women take the stage.
